Sailing to the Edge of the World

Sail along the Strait of Magellan from Punta Arenas to Navarino Island and Tierra del Fuego. Explore the areas surrounding the D'Agostini Glacier and marvel the sites along the Beagle Canal. Highlights include views of the "avenue of glaciers," which bear names like Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Holland and Romanche.

Your journey may take you to the Garibaldi Sound, where you can observe the towering peaks of the Darwin Mountain Range and admire the beautiful glacier of the same name. If you disembark in Puerto Williams, you will have reached the southernmost town in the world.

If you are interested in a shorter journey, you can set out from Puerto Williams to Cape Horn National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 2005. There you'll encounter a sculpture depicting an albatross in flight that was built in honor of all of the sailors who sacrificed their lives sailing through inclement weather on this route.

This solitary point on the map is also home to a Naval Station, which includes the tiny Stella Maris Chapel and a lighthouse. Believe it or not, there is also a small post office from which you can send a postcard from the end of the world.

Before you leave, take a moment to recall the last one hundred representatives of the Yagan culture who lived at Caleta Mejillones before the faltering population relocated to Villa Ukika on the outskirts of Puerto Williams.

Cruises	Appropriate Attire	Souvenirs
Embark on an adventure aboard a cruise from Puerto Williams to the Antarctic Peninsula, Cape Horn and the glaciers of Tierra del Fuego. Service is only available from November to May, when the weather is more pleasant.	Don't forget to bring appropriate footwear and warm, waterproof clothing. Keep in mind that the main goal of these cruises is to explore, so they include plenty of walks through forests and in the rain. In addition, disembarking via zodiac boats can be a chilly experience, so bring your hat and gloves.	Space aboard the cruise ships tends to be limited. Bring only what's absolutely necessary for the trip, and make sure you leave room for the gifts and souvenirs you'll buy in Puerto Williams, Punta Arenas and on the ships themselves.

A Learning Experience	Safety First
As we have mentioned, the main purpose of these cruises is exploration, so evening hours are filled with lectures on explorers, pirates and native peoples (especially the seafaring peoples who sailed these waters) and knot-tying workshops.	Keep in mind that the continent's frigid extremes are isolated from ports and cities, and emergency protocols for dangerous situations are necessarily very specific and rigorous.
