Boating on the Calle-Calle River

Board a gondola or river cruiser on the Calle Calle River and float past the river market, a lively spot where local vendors sell the freshest fish, seafood, fruits and vegetables around. You can also delight in the colony of sea lions that took up residence on the shoreline some time ago. Despite their huge size – males can weigh up to 250kg– they are not normally aggressive unless provoked.

As you continue downriver, the city gives way to the lush "Valdivian rainforest", which stays green throughout the year. A short distance from the city you'll see the Calle Calle River Boatyard, Teja Island, Universidad Austral, the Botanical Gardens – which house over 10,000 species – and Carlos Anwandter House, former home of one of the region's first German colonists and founder of the Anwandter brewery.

As you leave Isla Teja in your wake, you will head towards Corral and Mancera Island, where you can see historic forts. At this point the waterway becomes the Valdivia River. At the end of the journey, you'll catch a glimpse of the vessel El Canelo sitting high and dry on land, where it was left by the tsunami of 1960.

Getting There By Plane There are daily flights from Santiago to Valdivia (1h 25mins). By Bus Several companies provide direct service daily from Santiago to Valdivia (12 h). By Car Take Route 5 South from Santiago to Valdivia (841 km).
