Discover the Traditions of Aruacanía

Just seven blocks from the Plaza de Armas, you'll find Cerro Ñielol Natural Monument, Temuco's only National Protected Wildlife Area. Take in the natural wonders of forests of peumos, boldos, olivillos, oaks, laurels and ulmos. Discover historical highlights like the Chilean Armistice Lantern Tree that commemorates the foundation of the city by the members of the Mapuche community who gave their land to the colonists.

If you want to learn more about local history, visit Temuco Regional Museum. It is housed in a Colonial-period manor house that was declared a National Historic Monument. There, you can explore a collection of over 3,000 objects including pictorial, photographic and archeological collections.

Be sure to include a trip to the Mercado Municipal on your itinerary. Hundreds of small shops offer crafts and souvenirs next to restaurants which serve up an appealing variety of local fare. As you walk though its colorful hallways, you'll be tempted by the aromas and sights of quality dishes at great prices, including paila marina (seafood stew), fish, cazuela (a Chilean meat or chicken stew), pastel de choclo (corn pie) and humitas (shredded cooked corn seasoned with onion and wrapped in corn husks).
