Unlike Pucón and Villarrica, which are located a little further south, you won't find big towns, nightlife or casinos here. This is the Araucanía at its greenest, calmest and most rustic. Here, tourism is synonymous with nature and adventure.
Visit Conguillío National Park, where Araucaria trees adorn the hillsides and the Llaima Volcano rises mightily over them as if boasting about its status as one of the most active volcanoes in South America. Try your hand at hiking, cycling, kayaking and skiing, depending on the season.
Fall in love with towns like Curacautín and Lonquimay, where you can explore Pehuenche culture and gastronomy. Learn about the indigenous cosmovision, delight in the silver handicrafts and colorful textiles made with natural fibers and dyes, and find out why the Araucaria is a key element of this culture.
If relaxation and pleasure is what you are after, visit the area's four hot springs at Tolhuaca, Malalcahuello, Manzanar and Río Blanco, as well as the natural hot pools around Ranquil and Melipeuco. Termas de Malalcahuello is the largest local hot springs complex, with covered hot pools and spa services. If you visit during the winter months, combine a visit to the hot springs with a day of skiing at Las Araucarias or Corralco, both of which are located on the slopes of active volcanoes.
