Every year, sailing competitions attract both Chileans and international visitors, including spectators who simply want to take in the beauty of the sails moving to the rhythm of the wind. The country's extensive coastline makes it a terrific setting for this and other water sports.
Valparaíso hosts the annual "Off Valparaíso" regatta, the oldest in the country (dating back to 1973). It begins in late August and runs through the end of summer. The competition has undergone a number of changes over the years. Nowadays, for example, it's held on several different dates and features the participation of competitors from around the world.
Other sites on the central coast such as Recreo (Valparaíso), Algarrobo and Concón organize regattas for different types of watercraft. Other ideal settings for this sport include Lake Vichuquén and Laguna de Aculeo.
Chiloé is a popular summer destination thanks to its beauty and history, and every January it attracts visitors who come just for its biannual "Regata Islas de Chiloé."
